Why pools turn green here, and how they come back

Water turns green when the chlorine runs out and algae take over. On the island that happens fast: a week at 40 °C, a Saharan dust day that uses up the chlorine in hours, a pump that tripped while the owners were away, a villa closed for the winter. It goes cloudy first, then a green tint, then you cannot see the floor.

The company vacuums out what has settled, brushes the walls, shocks the water, runs the filter for long hours and backwashes it, then comes back to test and dose until the water is clear. Two or three visits is usual. A pool where you cannot see the bottom takes longer and more chemicals, which is why the form asks how green it is and for a photo.

Don't drain a green pool in the summer heat to save time: an empty pool in the sun can damage its plaster and shell, and refilling 50 m³ costs money and water the island is short of. Keep the pump running until the company comes. Once it is clear, regular visits keep it that way.

Questions

How much does it cost to clean a green pool in Cyprus?

One Paphos company's 2026 prices: €200 and up for a light tint, €450 and up for a full algae bloom, around €550 for a pool that was off all winter. The company confirms after seeing the photo or the pool.

How long until the water is clear?

Usually two or three visits. A pool where you cannot see the floor takes longer.

Why did my pool turn green after a heatwave or rain?

Heat and dust use up chlorine faster than the usual dose replaces it, and rain dilutes it and washes dirt in. A few days without enough chlorine is all algae need.

Should I drain a green pool?

No, not in summer. An empty pool in the sun can be damaged, and refilling costs money and water. Keep the pump running and let the company treat it.

Can we swim in it in the meantime?

Not until it is clear and tested. Green water means there is no working chlorine in it.
